About Dr. Smith
Dr. Robert L. Smith, Ph.D., LMFT, LMHC, LCAC, (better known as Dr. Bob) is committed to helping people tackle their mental health challenges head-on. With a Ph.D. in Psychology from North Central University (now part of National University in San Diego, CA), an M.A. in Marriage and Family Therapy from Christian Theological Seminary at Butler University in Indianapolis, IN, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Marian University in Indianapolis, IN, Dr. Smith has the expertise and experience to make a real difference.
Since starting his practice in 1995, Dr. Smith has focused on treating depression, anxiety, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). As a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Mental Health Counselor, and Licensed Clinical Addiction Counselor, he also helps people dealing with substance abuse, grief, loss, and major life changes. His approach is both evidence-based and deeply caring.
Dr. Smith is trained in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an evidence-based treatment for PTSD as well as other trauma and anxiety-based problems. He also uses Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Exposure Therapy, and family systems therapy, offering a comprehensive approach to mental health care.
Dr. Smith has a special knack for working with firefighters, police officers, and military personnel. As a retired firefighter/paramedic/lieutenant with the Indianapolis Fire Department and a retired Lt. Colonel in the Indiana Guard Reserve, he brings a unique perspective and understanding to helping first responders.
